Beastmarines Vs Tyranids

Hey all, I’m going to try writing up my weekly games at my FLGS, so for those interested you can hopefully expect a weekly wall of text detailing my misadventures in the GrimDark :)

Overview

Right this game was a bit of a mess, as it was the first time my opponent has used his Nid force. The first time I’d used a bunch of the options within my army, namely my shiny new Terminotaur and Saga of the Beastslayer on my Lord. It was also my first game vs nids, so I didn’t know how to handle them, so likely made a ton of tactical mistakes.

My List

Wolf Lord on TWC with Storm Shield, Power Weapon, Saga of the Beast Slayer, 2x Fenrisian Wolves and a Talisman

3x TWC with Storm Shield and Thunder Hammer

Lone Wolf in TDA with Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield and 2x Fenrisian Wolves

5x Grey Hunters with Melta in a Las-plas Razorback

5x Grey Hunters with Melta in a Las-plas Razorback

6x Long Fangs with 5x Missile Launcher

6x Long Fangs with 5x Missile Launcher

Their List (From memory, so bits might be off, as well was wargear options)

Hive Tyrant with wings and two scything talons.

Doom of Matalan in a Droppod(I know its malan’tai, but calling him Doom of Matalan amuses me :P )

Marloc

Trygon

8x Out flanking Genestealers

12x Out flanking Hormagaunts

2x Tervigon

2x 16x Termagaunts

Table

We played on a 6′x4′ table with an awesome amount of terrain on, in the center was a Tower, with a bunch of destroyed buildings surrounding it. and lots of random trees. While looking pretty it did hamper LOS for my Long Fangs, but thats all part of the fun :) Both board edges had a hill just left of the center.

Setup

We rolled table quarters, and 3 objectives. One was placed in his home quarter, one in mine and one in the center. I won the roll and opted to go first. I picked to go on the left half of my board, and deployed most of my army in a forest on the hill with my two melta razorbacks to my left board edge giving me covering fire into much of his deployment zone. My hope was that this would give me some cover for when the Nids got to me, allowing me to strike first vs some of the smaller guys.

He deploys in the opposite corner, with his Winged Hive Tyrant and Marloc closer to his left board edge behind a bunch of buildings.

He tries to steal the initiative and rolls a 5, my turn one.

My Turn One

I move my two Razorbacks into his half of the table and shoot his Trygon, hitting with both lascannons, and wounding once. My Long Fangs shoot at his units of Termagaunts, killing half a squad each. Unfortunately I couldn’t draw LOS to any of his big bugs. My third Razorback and Vindi can’t see anything, so sit their idly. My Lone Wolf moves towards the center of the board, hoping to find a big beasty.

His Turn One

One of his Tervigon’s spawns 15 gaunts, with a double 6 and other doesn’t spawn anything, the gaunts basically replace those that died in my last turns shooting. He burrows his Marloc, his Winged Tyrant moves close to my army, still hiding in cover. His Trygon moves into cover in his home objective.

My Turn Two

I roll for my wolf scouts and fail to bring them on. I move my two flanking Razorbacks closer to his quarter, one moves 12″ the other 6″ in the hope of being deep enough in that if his Stealers and Hormagaunts come on from that edge I’ll be out of charge range. I move my Lone Wolf back towards my army, as fighting hordes of Termagaunts isn’t his forty.

I move my TWC deeper into the wood for the same reason, as I’d much rather shoot stealers, and get eaten by them :) I move my Vindi closer to the center so I can draw LOS to his gaunts. Shooting and scattering by 7″ into nowhere joy :)

I shoot and at his newly spawned Termagaunts with one unit of Long Fangs, and kill half. The other unit shoots one of the half dead units, and kill all but three. The Razorback that moved 6″ shoots the Trygon, hits and fails to wound.

His Turn Two

He rolls for his reserves, and gets all three, Matalan bravely drops into a clearing in the forest just behind my Long Fangs, his marker is about 6″ from the board edge, so any deviation and Matalan is asking for it, fortunately for him he rolled a hit. Both his stealers and Hormagaunts come in on my left edge, just behind the Razorbacks.

His non-barren Tervigon spawns 12 gaunts on unique rolls, and spawns them in his home ruin.

The Marloc surfaces away from my lines, as doing so would risk his Matalan and outflanking troops. His Trygon jumps over the ruins and heads towards the center. And his hordes of Termagaunts and Tervigon stream into the center.

His winged Tyrant flys towards my Vindi, launches his assault and wrecks the tank :(

The Stealers fleet towards the Razorback that moved 12″ and the Hormagaunts fleet towards my Long Fangs, both get within charge range.

The Doom of Matalan uses his lame arse Leech Life and kills 3 Long Fangs and put two wounds of different TWC. So how he has strength 8 attacks or something daft, joy.

The stealers assault the Razorback, 21 attacks, 2 hits, 1 glance and it can’t shoot next turn. The Hormagaunts assault my Long Fangs, I get my counter charge roll off, he kills 3 I kill 3, drawn combat /me dance.

His Doom of Matalan charges my Long Fangs and nothing does, so combat is drawn. I later realised that this is an illegal move, as you can’t assault after a deep strike, oh well :P

My Turn Three

I roll for my scouts, and the come on behind the stealers.

I move my Razorback that got hugged by the Stealers 12″ towards his home objective, hoping that my Scouts would prove to be a good diversion allowing the marines to make their escape.

I move my Razorback thats current in my forest towards the center of the board, the marines jump out and flamer the gaunts on the center objective. I did this mainly to clear the path for me to assault the Doom of Matalan with my Lone Wolf. The TWC and Lord move towards the engaged Long Fangs fighting the Hormagaunts. I fire a lascannon at his Trygon and wound it.

My Lord and TWC assault the Hormagaunts, the lord killing 5, and the regular guys finishing off the swarm. My Lone Wolf assaults Doom, and wounds him twice, but he kills the other two Long Fangs and ends up on 8 wounds.

His Turn Three

His stealers move towards my scouts, buying my marines some time to regroup. His Termagaunts move towards the center, which is now teaming with far to many little guys, his Trygon moves towards tiny 3 man Long Fang unit and his Tyrant moves towards my 5 man flamer squad.

His stealers charge and wipeout the scouts, his Trygon charges and kills the 3 Long Fangs, and his Tyrant kills all of the 5 man flamer squad. Doom does nothing to the Long Wolf, and the Lone Wolf does 1 wound to him. He passes his no-retreat roll, down to 7 wounds.

My Turn Four

I jump all my marines out of their transpots, as they are all within 12″ of the Trygon that killed my Long Fangs. My TWC move and fleet towards the Trygon. Two las-plas razorbacks, 8 rapid firing bolters and two melta guns kill the Trygon in a hail of dakka.

Doom of Matalan Leeches the life out of my Lone Wolf, I rolled like 15 on three dice, causing 7 wounds, and I failed two, and unfortunately I would take any Feel no Pain rolls so he died.

My TWC and Lord are close enough to his Tyrant to charge in.

The Tyrant hits and kills 1 TWC, and the Lord and Storm Shield make their invulnerable saves. The Lord half kills the Tyrant, and the Thunder Hammer finishes him off.

His Turn Four

His stealers fleet and assault my disembarked Grey Hunters, wiping them out. His gaunts move to re-capture his home objective, and the center of the board objective. Doom moves towards the center, but is out of range for his Leech Life power.

Game Over

Unfortunately it was kick out time, so we  couldn’t finish the game, but it was surprisingly close, He’d killed 12 Long Fangs, 5 marines 5 scouts one TWC and my Lone Wolf, and I’d killed His Tyrant, Trygon, 2 units of gaunts and 1 unit of Hormagaunts and was in a position to kill his Stealers, and assault into his Tervigons with my TWC, though with the Doom of Matalan moving closer it was anyone game.

Overall the game was very fun, although I completely forgot to ever roll my Beastslayer rerolls vs Doom of Matalan and his Tyrant. And Doom assaulting my Long Fangs early on messed things up, because I could have opened up on him with a torent of fire and hopefully killed him off had he not illegally(afaik) charged.

I’ve got a rematch next week, so I’ll me tweaking my list to get some much needed psychic defence, and we’ll have to see if I can remember my rerolls :)
